The Seasoning of APEX @ ODTUG

Well, my busiest day at ODTUG is already behind me! We had somewhere around 150 participants at the APEX Symposium yesterday, which was amazing as it was both a Sunday and Father's Day.

The day started off with my keynote, which I successfully navigated through 431 slides in just 30 minutes. It was done in a different style - very rapid, each slide getting only a few seconds of display time. From what I've heard, people liked it, as it kept them engaged, something not easy to do on a Sunday morning after a night on Bourbon Street!

The day was comprised of a number of APEX customers telling their stories about how they got APEX adopted into their environments. This was a departure from the normal "here's how to do something cool" approach, but it was a departure that was both well needed and received. It was very interesting to see the wide range of projects being done with APEX. One of the few common threads between all of the presenters is that each project was vastly different from the next.

Today is my "down" day; I don't have anything aside from a few client calls and ODTUG meetings. I'm looking forward to seeing a few presentations and meeting up with those that I have not had a chance to see.

Hi Scott - loved your presentation at ODTUG (and also the 431 quickie-thing, brilliant in the morning!).

However, you mentioned publishing your examplecode/app at sumnertech homepage? Would be nice if you could tell me where - or upload it if it isn't there yet.

Thanks - I had a lot of fun preparing and presenting that!

As for the slides & app, I'll have them up on sumnertech.com in the next few days, as I have to package up the DDL and then put in hooks & instructions for others to download the 3rd party extensions, as I can not legally distribute those.

Ok, since you said you were going to upload the app++,I haven't bothered to check too much into it myself yet - also because summertime = vacation. Just wonder, does one need any userlogin @ sumnertech, or isn't the files available yet? Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Manipulating Images with the... Database?

A recent thread on the OTN HTML DB Forum asked about how to determine the width & height of an image stored as a BLOB in an Oracle table. I mentioned in that thread that I have some code to manipulate an image stored in a BLOB column. This is particularly useful if you’re going to let users upload images, and you want to re-size them to display as a thumbnail. Thanks to Oracle interMedia , it is trivial to manipulate the width, height, and other attributes of images stored in an Oracle table. I’ve created a sample application here which demonstrates Oracle interMedia and HTML DB in action. Feel free to have a look. You can download this application from HTML DB Studio as well. Basically, this application allows you to upload images and perform an operation on the image as it is inserted into the PHOTO_CATALOG table. Page 0 Branches

What? There's no way to put a Branch on Page 0 of an ApEx application! Or is there... Technically, no - page 0 does not support branches. But how many times do you wish it did? This scenario recently came up: I wanted to put a "Search" box on every page in my application, so no matter where a user is, they can search the site. Currently, it has 10 or so pages, but this will grow to closer to 50 by production. So, thought #1 was to put an text item on Page 0, call it search, and then ensure that each and every page had some sort of Branch to run the search. Not so fun, as this was a tedious task, even for just 10 pages. And each time a new page was added to the application - by myself or anyone else - the search branch would have to be added to the page. Clearly not a scalable solution.
